Would you like to dive Silver Springs?
For a few years at the end of the Eisenhower administration Hollywood legend Lloyd Bridges used the once gin-clear output of Silver Springs as the set for a TV show based on a scuba diver. Over 155 episodes of the adventure series “Sea Hunt” — more than 100 of which were filmed at Silver Springs — Bridges portrayed Mike Nelson, a one-time Navy frogman who in the space of 30 minutes, as the online version of Skin Diver magazine once noted, “got into trouble, got out of trouble, rescued a damsel, caught the bad guys and neatly wrapped things up with a safety message.” Now that Silver Springs is slated to become a state park, and enticing ecotourists is viewed as a must, a drive is on to open up the waterway … Read entire article »

Discussion to open cave diving at Wakulla
By Jennifer Portman Democrat senior writer CRAWFORDVILLE —Opinions were sharply divided at a public workshop Thursday night on whether recreational cave diving should be allowed at Wakulla Spring, the centerpiece of Wakulla Springs State Park. More than 200 people turned out to the Wakulla County Agriculture Extension Arena for the meeting hosted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to get input on a proposal to reverse a 26-year-old policy forbidding public diving in the 300-foot-deep first-magnitude spring. About 100 people filled out speaker cards and were given about a minute each to make their pitches — both for and against the plan — to officials with DEP’s Division of Parks and Recreation. Many of those opposed to the idea wore badges and held small signs that read: “No more threats to Wakulla Spring.” “It may … Read entire article »
Public hearing on whether or not to open the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park to cave divers
On January 19th, the Florida Park Service will be hosting a public hearing on whether or not to open the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park to cave divers (see the Media Advisory). Currently, diving access to Wakulla Springs has only been through government permit, with few permits having been applied for and granted. As a result, access to Wakulla Springs has largely been closed to technical divers irrespective of training organization or qualifications. If potential future access is of interest to you, than we urge you to attend the hearing in support of opening Wakulla Springs to properly trained and certified technical cave divers, as well as submitting your opinions in writing prior to the meeting (the address for written submissions is included in the below Media Advisory). If you … Read entire article »

WES SKILES PEACOCK SPRINGS STATE PARK
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held a special ceremony in the renaming North Florida’s Peacock Springs State Park, a site popular to many cave divers, after internationally renowned cave explorer, cinematographer and photographer Wes Skiles. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s renamed Peacock Springs State Park to honor the late Wes Skiles for his passion for the protection of Florida’s springs and vast understanding of the Floridan aquifer in the form of superb educational and adventurous science films he has produced over the years. As many you know, Wes Skiles died in a diving accident during a filming project off Boynton Beach, Florida back in August 2010. The park’s new name will now be known as Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park. The park, located east of Luraville in Live Oak, … Read entire article »

I placed this post out under PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) Discussion Topics area this morning. Why are Instructors excluded from being a choice for students to select when registering/signing up elearning? a few years ago, PICs were available online except for Instructors. Now elearning is online and ALL Teaching Status Instructors are not listed as a contact for the prospective student. Take the total number of Teaching Status Instructors there are in the database. Divide the number of IRRAs into that number and tell me if the quotent is a realistic number? That number represents the number of instructors / IRRA. It’s over a 100 instructors / IRRA. What is the average number of Instructors / IRRA? Perhaps 10. Why is there such a deviation between the two numbers? Now, take that difference, … Read entire article »
