Solicite for Blackbeard as Jacksonvilles Newest 2010 Artificial Reef

I see the Jacksonville Offshore Fishing Club soliciting to have Blackbeard placed offshore Jacksonville, Florida as an artificial reef. Now that the cat is out. This is one of our next hopefulls. About one month ago, a team went to visit Blackbeard. I took video and pictures, while others surveyed the vessel. She’s in really great shape considering her age. Built back in the latter 1950’s, she served Mayport as a ferry to suttle motoriized vessles from one side of the St. Johns to the other. Today she sits and has been sitting for a number of years at the Green Cove docks along the intercoastal.  Here is a post from a member of the Jacksonville Offshore Fishing Club, JOSFC. http://www.firstcoastangler.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/topic/213/gonew/1.html We need your support and donations. Diving Memorial Weekend, 2010

I will be heading to Ginnie Springs Memorial weekend, May 31, 2010. My plans are to just relax. Dive when I feel like diving. I plan on filming to get use to the new camera, housing and lights. I believe the place may be packed with tubers. It’s too early to tell what the weather will be like that three day weekend. We can only hope for SUNNY days. I also plan on camping one night, Saturday night. Arrive at 9AM Saturday, depart when ever Sunday. Who knows, maybe I’ll spend two nights. I sure hope it’s not too hot at night. I wonder if I should carry a fan. There is electricity and water at each camp site. I’ll let you know how it turns out after the memorial weekend is … Read entire article »

Gulf of Mexico BP Oil catastrophe

Dear REEF Members, The Gulf Oil Spill is highly likely to have lasting impacts on wildlife, ecosystems, and people – both locally in the Gulf, as well as regionally in the greater Florida area and possibly throughout the Caribbean. Like you, all of us at REEF have been closely following the news about this unfortunate disaster. While REEF is not directly involved in the response to the oil spill, we are poised to provide baseline data on fish populations in the affected regions if needed. Thanks to the efforts of REEF volunteers, approximately 5,600 fish population surveys have been conducted in the Gulf of Mexico since 1994. This includes over 1,500 surveys along the west coast of Florida, 3,500 surveys in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, and another 600 in … Read entire article »

General McArthur at the signing of the Japanese Surrender WWII

This is an actual film made of the surrender ceremony of the Japanese to Supreme Commander, General McArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945. Actual voice of the General. Japanese Surrender Signing Aboard Battleship Missouri Sunday September 2, 1945. The battleship is a large, heavily armored warship with a main battery consisting of the largest caliber of guns. Battleships are larger, better-armed and better-armored than cruisers and destroyers. Battleship design continually evolved to incorporate and adapt technological advances to maintain an edge. The word battleship was coined around 1794 and is a shortened form of line-of-battle ship, the dominant warship in the Age of Sail. “battleship” The Oxford English Dictionary. 2nd ed. … Read entire article »

Paradise Springs, Ocala Florida

Today, Saturday May 8th, I and a friend drove to Paradise Springs in Ocala. We met up with Gerold (Jerry) from Divebuddy. There were a number others who announced they wanted to go, but didn’t make it. It was nice. I was the first at the site. We signed in and drove over to get our best spot and began unloading and preparing to be the first to enter the water while the visibility was good. Dave and I went in along with Michael, who drove out and surprised me being there. We scoured around the place finding a number of figurines tucked in glooves or placed on shelves. I notice on the ceiling what appeared to be ribbon from the formation above. I also noticed that it went around this one hugh piece … Read entire article »

Highway Cleanup

Headed out today, Saturday 21, 2009 to Little Talbot Island where volunteers with the Jacksonville Reef Research Team met to cleanup 4 miles of litter along the highway. I took the farthest point south and walked north, back towards the entrance to the park. Other teams took the north route and headed south. I was quite surprised and pleased that in the 1 mile I walked, I produced just one full bag of litter. That’s great! I believe we ended up with about 8 bags and a few other items to large to fit in the bag. Great Job everyone! Larry Davis … Read entire article »
