TUFF-E-NUFF
Saturday November 20, 2010 Joe Kistel and I, Larry Davis drove up to St. Marys, Georgia to TUFF-E-NUFF, the 105 year old tug built in 1895. We spend about 5 hours on the vessel, cleaning, removing stuff, and inspectiing the engine compartment. Here are some pictures from that day. You can see the amount of work there is and needs to get done. If you or anyone you know would like to get involved with creating an artificial reef, we would love to hear from you. Get a different perspective of what goes on to ready this vessel for her new home. This picture shows the amount of rust and silt built up. You can just make out the bolts in the center. In this next picture, you are looking aft, starboard side. … Read entire article »

Manatees with Dr. Quinton White
Last night I attended a presentation on the subject of Manatees. Though I live in Florida and Florida has manatees, the subject covered the Florida manatees as well as manatee sightings around the globe. In the pictures are Dr. Quinton White. Subject were very informative and kept me drawn into the slide presentation as well as the information being passed onto the audience. For example, a comparison of population growth during warm water vs. hour of light. Temperature follows hours of light. What was displayed were graphs which depicting the occurrence of population growth during longer daylight hours as well as an increase in water temperature. The graph displayed both equally, yet temperature showed a slight delay when compared to the light hours. Here is the link to the Jacksonville University Marine … Read entire article »
TUFF-E-NUFF The Tug that was
Remember the article posted earlier on the Tugboat TUFF-E-NUFF? Sept 8th Tuff-E-Nuff article Sept 17th Tuff-E-Nuff article Things have progressed and are rapidly coming into place. Contracts are being drawn up, fed-x is sending and receiving documents for us. This weekend, November 20th, primary TISIRI members will be on-board the vessel, identifying, marking and preparing the vessel for placement somewhere near the central Eastern seaboard off Florida. The exact location has not been finalized but it looks like somewhere near Daytona. TUFF-E-NUFF is over 100 years old. A double hulled steel boat, a very nice one at that, will be serving out the rest of her duties in around 190 feet of sea water. There she will serve a post of vigilance for passing creatures of the deep and perhaps act as a station … Read entire article »

When to service your scuba equipment
Divers, it’s that time again, when ever that time may be. Our once a year servicing of our life support equipment. Equipment such as Regulators, cylinders, guages, batteries, bulbs., logbooks, etc. It’s a good time to restock on misc. items you need to keep on hand for field repairs. I nice tackle box will do. Some say you should service your equipment just before you begin to use it again. This way the time the parts are used is when the equipment will be used the most. Some believe equipment should be serviced after its completion from use. This way it is stored in good clean working order and ready for when you need it. Which ever it may be, before or after, servicing your equipment following the manufacturers recommended servicing schedule is very important. Not … Read entire article »
