Ancient City Gamefish Association

Tuesday October 19, 2010 TISIRI team members, except Ed Kalakauskis whom claims he could not attend due to a Honey Do,  presented a brief 15 minute presentation of Artificial Reefs and included the new Andy King Reef placed a few months ago, 7 miles off  the coast of St. Augustine, Florida to St. Augustine’s Ancient City Gamefish Association. Here is a video of the material being collected for placement at Andy King Reef. Recent Post on facebook

I placed this post out under PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) Discussion Topics area this morning. Why are Instructors excluded from being a choice for students to select when registering/signing up elearning? a few years ago, PICs were available online except for Instructors. Now elearning is online and ALL Teaching Status Instructors are not listed as a contact for the prospective student. Take the total number of Teaching Status Instructors there are in the database. Divide the number of IRRAs into that number and tell me if the quotent is a realistic number? That number represents the number of instructors / IRRA. It’s over a 100 instructors / IRRA. What is the average number of Instructors / IRRA? Perhaps 10. Why is there such a deviation between the two numbers? Now, take that difference, … Read entire article »

REEF-in-Brief September 2010

REEF-in-Brief September 2010 Introduction By Paul Humann, REEF Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board Greetings! While fall used to be a slower time here at REEF, this year we are busier than ever. In addition to working with scientists to get them up-to-date species data and continuing to coordinate and expand the citizen science Fish Survey Project to new regions, the REEF staff is involved in a variety of marine conservation issues including the lionfish invasion in the Caribbean and associated waters and endangered species spawning aggregation research. This issue of REEF-in-Brief features updates from several of these programs. None of this critically important work would be possible without continued financial contributions from our members. We greatly appreciate your support and commitment to our efforts, and hope you enjoy this issue. If you are inspired … Read entire article »

NOAA Announces to their Divers

To All NOAA Divers,   In response to several requests from NOAA divers for clarification on acceptable areas for diving in the Gulf of Mexico, the NOAA Diving Control and Safety Board sought advice from several agencies including the US Navy, EPA and NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R).  Based on this advice, the Board decided to establish a "diving exclusion zone" extending 30 NM beyond the furthest boundary line shown in the 72-Hour Nearshore Surface Oil Forecast for the Deepwater Horizon (MC252) incident which is produced and updated daily by OR&R. As the boundary line may change daily, it is imperative that all NOAA divers wishing to dive in the Gulf of Mexico consult the OR&R webpage to view the projected location of the surface and near-surface oil over the next 72 hours and then extend it outward 30 additional … Read entire article »

Blue Grotto with Lisa Fantastic

Today I met up with Lisa at Blue Grotto for some diving. Lisa and I spoke Friday and since my plans this past weekend did not including diving due to schedule work, and that scheduled work was cancelled, I am free to do some diving. Perfect timing. We met soon after Blue Grotto Opened. We were the first two divers onsite. Lisa Texts me at 07:59 saying she beat me. I respond with OMG!, hoping she would think I forgot, when I was actually just 1 minute away. We spoke for awhile and after about an hour we hit the water. Ooops, gear failure. It appears a spring in the exhaust valve is missing and the BCD cannot hold air. One phone call and 10 minutes later, a … Read entire article »

Ginnie Springs

Dec 5, 2009. A team of Open Water Divers, their instructor, Divemaster Candidate and myself, with video camera made a trip to Ginnie Springs to continue with open water training. It was a perfect day for diving. Cold outside and water temps at 72 degrees. It was warmer in the water than out. There was no one at Ginnie, except a small number of divers. Perhaps 12 divers in all and we had 7 of the 12.  I figured either it was too cold for people to go diving or the Gators game that started at 4pm was the reason. Which ever, we got to dive AND listen to the game on the ride home. Great students! Here is a small clip from that day.
