REEF-in-Brief September 2010

REEF-in-Brief September 2010 Introduction By Paul Humann, REEF Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board Greetings! While fall used to be a slower time here at REEF, this year we are busier than ever. In addition to working with scientists to get them up-to-date species data and continuing to coordinate and expand the citizen science Fish Survey Project to new regions, the REEF staff is involved in a variety of marine conservation issues including the lionfish invasion in the Caribbean and associated waters and endangered species spawning aggregation research. This issue of REEF-in-Brief features updates from several of these programs. None of this critically important work would be possible without continued financial contributions from our members. We greatly appreciate your support and commitment to our efforts, and hope you enjoy this issue. If you are inspired … Read entire article »

Tuff-E-Nuff

It is Sunday September 5, 2010 and we’re off to St. Mary’s Georgia to a Marina that has a 19th century tug sitting on a sandbar at the edge of the river. It is around 11:30am when we arrive at St. Mary’s Boat Service where the tug is located. Today we took the opportunity to document the vessel and our ideas on getting her prepared for her new home, hopefully somewhere off the coast of Florida. Here is a small video of that day. Solicite for Blackbeard as Jacksonvilles Newest 2010 Artificial Reef

I see the Jacksonville Offshore Fishing Club soliciting to have Blackbeard placed offshore Jacksonville, Florida as an artificial reef. Now that the cat is out. This is one of our next hopefulls. About one month ago, a team went to visit Blackbeard. I took video and pictures, while others surveyed the vessel. She’s in really great shape considering her age. Built back in the latter 1950’s, she served Mayport as a ferry to suttle motoriized vessles from one side of the St. Johns to the other. Today she sits and has been sitting for a number of years at the Green Cove docks along the intercoastal.  Here is a post from a member of the Jacksonville Offshore Fishing Club, JOSFC. http://www.firstcoastangler.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/topic/213/gonew/1.html We need your support and donations. Spike, the new Artificial Reef

It was around October 2008 when I heard about The Spike. There was a calling to see if the owners would be willing to donate her and volunteers to clean her. Between October 2008 and March 2009, very little was heard on the subject of “Spike.” Around mid March 2009, I was brought to see Spike. She was beautiful. Spike is a retired USCG Tender that served Mayport Florida from her commission in 1968 to her decommissioning 1988. The US Coast Guard turned Spike over to Jacksonville’s Safe Harbor Boys Home where she was used as a dormatory and for maritime training. Here I began taking photographs of her before anything changed. To document what would never be again, before it it lost. I also began to video the rooms and compartments, hatches, and passageways. Around April/May 2009 time frame things began to pick … Read entire article »
