Divers on underwater scooters duke it out this weekend in Weeki Wachee
WEEKI WACHEE — As a sport, underwater scooter racing could hardly be compared to NASCAR. In fact, competitors only reach top speeds of about 5 mph. But if you love scuba diving as much as Joe Weatherby does, it’s the ultimate thrill. Two years ago, Weatherby formed the Wreck Racing League, the first sanctioning body devoted to organized competition for diver propulsion vehicles, also known as DPVs. This weekend, the league will play host to the Weeki Wachee Warrior Challenge at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. About 50 divers are expected to compete in the three-day event, which begins today. Volga disaster: 110 bodies trapped in sunken boat
I thought this needed to be posted. As fellow divers, family members and citizens of the world, our empathy and sympathies go out to all involved, to the families we share our blessing and prayers. ATLANTIS II
The Atlantis II is the vessel used by Dr. Robert Ballard when the Titanic was discovered back in 1985. Atlantis II sits in Mayport Florida (Jacksonville), near the mouth of the St. Johns River. This famous vessel went off shore June 8, 2011 and I was invited to join her in her journey. The day started at 08:00 with me jumping in my vehicle to meet up at the pier for the 9am departure. With all my photography gear, I hussled onboard to meet the crew and owners of the vessel to immediately begin documenting the day, on film. I was introduced and took a tour of the vessel. Hi All I am a proud member of an organization called “The Dive Pirates Foundation”. Dive Pirates is non-profit organization dedicated to bringing scuba diving to persons with disabilities. What began in 2003 as a social club for divers has now been transformed into a non-profit foundation that teaches, equips and takes disabled persons on Caribbean scuba diving trips. The program is open to all medically qualified disable persons, Dive Pirates has chosen to focus on disabled military veterans that have sustained injuries on the battlefield. These men and women have sustained injuries and had lost part of their youth in combat; we hope to restore a sense of adventure, community and hope for these wounded warriors. Fishing for a cure
While I was participating a highway cleanup Saturday morning with the Jacksonville Reef Research Team, TISIRI’s Joe Kistel was present at the Fishing For A Cure with The David Garrard Foundation. The event is intended to show support for our foster kids and their parents. It was a great weekend of activities and the weather cooperated all weekend long. Saturdays fishing event had everyone who caught something being a winner. Pictures from Saturday fishing tournament may be found at tisiri.com. Sundays event had us beginning with breakfast, then a boat ride off shore St. Augustine. The kids were great and I believe all of the kids caught something.
