Buggery on the High Seas
I loaned out my video camera to a team member for todays dive offshore florida. When they returned the camera, they unknowningly left it recording while out at sea. Unfortunately there is no video because it is facing something that made the video dark, BUT the audio came out. Here is what the camera recorded. Sounds like a rough ride back for a few… 🙂 Listen to The Buggery No one on any boat was harmed during the making of this audio. Manta Ray filmed off Jacksonville
This film clip of a manta ray was taken Friday October 22, 2010 off the coast of Jacksonville Florida. The divers reported the scale was at least a 20 foot wing span. This is a first. I never knew they came this close to our coast line. October 22, 2010, a Friday to remember for these divers who not only saw the Manta Ray but filmed her. The TISIRI team was once again working on the environment. Out collecting trash as part of a grant by West Marine. The days events were being documented on film. Joe Kistel, as the last diver to enter the water explains the story to me like this: I was just about the enter the water when Ed pops up yelling “hey big bam rayjama smellow.” The captain … Read entire article »

Recent Post on facebook
I placed this post out under PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) Discussion Topics area this morning. Why are Instructors excluded from being a choice for students to select when registering/signing up elearning? a few years ago, PICs were available online except for Instructors. Now elearning is online and ALL Teaching Status Instructors are not listed as a contact for the prospective student. Take the total number of Teaching Status Instructors there are in the database. Divide the number of IRRAs into that number and tell me if the quotent is a realistic number? That number represents the number of instructors / IRRA. It’s over a 100 instructors / IRRA. What is the average number of Instructors / IRRA? Perhaps 10. Why is there such a deviation between the two numbers? Now, take that difference, … Read entire article »

Tuff-E-Nuff
It is Sunday September 5, 2010 and we’re off to St. Mary’s Georgia to a Marina that has a 19th century tug sitting on a sandbar at the edge of the river. It is around 11:30am when we arrive at St. Mary’s Boat Service where the tug is located. Today we took the opportunity to document the vessel and our ideas on getting her prepared for her new home, hopefully somewhere off the coast of Florida. Here is a small video of that day. It’s official – A new Artificial Reef off St. Augustine, Florida!
July and August, 2010 have been productive months for Carl Blow of the St. Johns County Port, Waterway, and Beach District Commissioner, St. Augustine, Florida. One of Carls roles is in Artificial construction. Carl and the Ancient City Game Fish Association was instrumental in procuring the neccessary approvals and coordination of resources to successfully place 700 tons pilings, once used to guide vessles under the temporary bridge built, while the Bridge of Lions was being refurbished to its original state. Those pilings were pulled from service, placed on a barge, cut in half, towed approx. 7 miles off short St. Augustine as St. Johns county’s sees it’s newest artificial reef. Here is a small video made July 2010 of the material being pulled and placed on a barge: [xr_video id=”cc2c5f0a1ba74f25a8180215200c0744″ size=”sm”] The new site named Andy King … Read entire article »

Off to Film “The Spike”
It’ 6:30am on a Friday, August 20 and I am waiting for the rest of the gang to show up at Mayport Docks. The sun light is just starting to show itself. Two of the other divers show up around 7am. we setup our gear while we’re waiting for your boat and captain to arrive. At around 7:45am all four of us head out, three divers and the captain, who is also a diver towards Spike. Spike sits about 25 miles almost due east of the Mayport Jetties. It is a very nice day. Almost no clouds and the weather report calls for temps in the 90’s, sea condition show to be 2-3 feet (on the NOAA website) yet other boaters are reporting 2 feet or less with about an 11 … Read entire article »

BP gets OK to burn off captured oil, gas at sea
By RAY HENRY and BRIAN SKOLOFF, Associated Press Writers Ray Henry And Brian Skoloff, Associated Press Writers – 1 hr 18 mins ago PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. – BP won permission to start burning oil and gas piped up from its broken seafloor well as part of a pledge to more than triple how much crude it stops from spewing into the Gulf of Mexico. Federal authorities gave permission late Monday for BP PLC to use a new method that involves pumping oil from the busted wellhead to a special ship on the surface, were it would be burned off rather than collected. The British oil giant announced Monday it hopes to trap as much as roughly 2.2 million gallons of oil daily by the end of June as it deploys additional containment equipment, including the flaring system.
