US tiger shrimp sightings worry scientists

US tiger shrimp sightings worry scientists

By JANET McCONNAUGHEY | Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A big increase in reports of Asian tiger shrimp along the U.S. Southeast coast and in the Gulf of Mexico has federal biologists worried the species is encroaching on native species’ territory. The black-and-white-striped shrimp can grow 13 inches long and weigh a quarter-pound, compared to eight inches and a bit over an ounce for domestic white, brown and pink shrimp. Scientists fear the tigers will bring … Read entire article »

Stop the sale of Shark in a bottle

Stop the sale of Shark in a bottle

It has just come to our attention, sharks are being sold in a bottle. This is not a new thing from what we are finding. Yet today, after growing in knowledge and understanding of the need to protect what we humans feel we may neglect, it is imperative that we voice our objection to the commercialization and industrialization through proliferation of a species to its extinction. Here is one example:   eBay Please do not let this happen, ANYWHERE. Contact … Read entire article »

Killer whale possibly killed by U.S. military explosion

Killer whale possibly killed by U.S. military explosion

Military tests off Washington killed at least one orca, scientist suspects Some U.S. scientists believe a killer whale that washed up off the coast of Washington last month might have been killed by a military explosion. The three-year-old female orca was a member of L-pod, a group that lives in Canadian waters during the summer months. The killer whale’s carcass washed ashore at Long Beach, Wash., Feb. 11. A necropsy found the marine mammal died from highly unusual injuries. ‘Chances … Read entire article »

Shark fin soup to blame for blue shark decline

Shark fin soup to blame for blue shark decline

by Tamera Jones hey discovered that the sharks feed in exactly the same places in the ocean that long-line fishing boats operate, which means they get caught along with other target fish. The researchers add that such regions are ideal places to implement so-called marine protected areas, where fishing is banned, to safeguard blue sharks and other vulnerable species. ‘These sharks aren’t simply by-catch; we think along with mako sharks they’re being targeted for the shark fin market … Read entire article »

Astonishing discovery of ‘supergiant’ crustaceans made off New Zealand

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com There are ordinary amphipods, known to be mostly tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that thrive in aquatic environments around the world, and now there are “supergiant” amphipods, which are 10 times larger and, frankly, quite freakish-looking (see video and photo). British scientists made the remarkable discovery by accident while participating in a joint expedition with New Zealand scientists to probe the depths of the Kermadec Trench, north of New Zealand. Using a large metal trap outfitted with cameras, they’d hoped to haul up a species of deep-sea snailfish that had not been captured in more than 60 years. Instead they hauled up, from nearly 33,000 feet below, seven milky-white amphipods measuring to about 11 inches, or the size of small lobsters. (Ordinary amphipods barely exceed 1 inch.) Dr. Alan Jamieson, from the … Read entire article »

Application allows one to track ocean wonderers

by Andrea Mustain, OurAmazingPlanet Staff Writer Whither do the great animals of the ocean wander? And when? Thanks to high-tech gadgetry and a decade of work, an answer has begun to emerge — one that has revealed two vast “grasslands” of the Pacific Ocean that rival the Serengeti in the riotous diversity of species that converge there, scientists say. In the largest study of its kind ever attempted, scientists affixed tracking tags to 23 of the ocean’s top predators and spied on their whereabouts — sometimes within a few meters accuracy and in real time — over the course of 10 years. The Tagging of Pacific Predators Project (TOPP) kicked off in 2000, and published its findings this week in the journal Nature. The project is part of the Census of Marine Life, … Read entire article »

Cozumel September 2011

In September 2011, a team of divers visited Cozumel Mexico. Our goal was many fold. We all arrived Saturday the 3rd except for one diver who arrives Sept. 1st and departed on the 5th, while the remaining departed Sept 10, 2011. Our first full day was dedidcated to vsiting and hopefully getting into the water wih Whale Sharks. Our Second day (9/5) was spent hunting and harvesting Lionfish and the evening consuming them, ceveche style, kabobed and fried. The ceveche style was my favorite. Had a slght reaction to the toxin which made my throat swell slightly. The feeling was like the tiny bones found in anchivies. I recovered a few days later… Wednesday Afternoon I spend diving with the Marine Park Services hunting and filming lionfish for a documentary, separate from … Read entire article »

Florida approves shark protections

Florida wildlife managers approved a ground-breaking shark protection measure  on Wednesday that will make it illegal for anglers fishing state waters to keep  tiger sharks or three species of hammerheads. The measure is intended to reverse a sharp decline in populations of the four  species, which use coastal waters as breeding and feeding grounds. Scientists  say sharks, despite their dangerous reputations, serve important roles in  maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. “Sometimes the appropriate measures of conservation are the problems we  avoid, not the problems we have to fix,” said Brian Yablonski, a member of the  Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in a release. The new rule, which will take effect Jan. 1, prohibits the possession,  sale and exchange of tiger sharks and great, scalloped and smooth hammerhead  sharks harvested from state … Read entire article »

Making It Count – October 2011

Putting It To Work: REEF Advanced Assessment Team Member Co-Authors Publication on Barracuda By Christy Pattengill-Semmens, Ph.D., Director of Science REEF Advanced Assessment Team Member, Dave Grenda, recently co-authored a paper documenting behavioral observations of young Great Barracuda occurring on live bottom sub-tropical reefs primarily at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Georgia. For the past three years Dave assisted University of Connecticut researcher, Dr. Peter Auster, in studying behavioral interactions of piscivores and their prey. During REEF surveys on these cruises, Dave and the other researchers documented young-of-year (YOY) Great Barracuda (those individuals that had very recently settled to the reef, and were between 2-3 inches in length) hunting YOY Tomtate and Silverside that were taking refuge under ledges. Groups of YOY Barracuda would attack, capture, and consume … Read entire article »
