Putting It to Work: Who’s Using REEF Data, May 2011 By Christy Pattengill-Semmens, Ph.D., Director of Science Every month, scientists, government agencies, and other groups request raw data from REEF’s Fish Survey Project database. Here is a sampling of who has asked for REEF data recently and what they are using it for: -Researchers used data on yelloweye rockfish frequency of occurrence in the San Juan Islands in Washington to evaluate population status for the San Juan County Community Development and Planning Department. – The Tunicate Response Action Committee (TRAC) in Washington State evaluated data on three invasive tunicates that are included REEF’s Pacific Northwest program. – A scientist from Florida Fish and Wildlife requested data on yellowtail snapper populations in the Southeastern US to conduct analyses for a stock assessment. The preparations of the 19th century tug boat TUFF-E-NUFF began back sometime around October, 2010. TISIRI had caught wind of a vessel in the St. Mary’s river, Georgia. A 19th century tug boat TUFF-E-NUFF. Originally named Thomas Cunningham Sr, she was built in 1895 by Neafie & Levy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1948 the Thomas Cunningham Sr was rebuilt. The steam engine [singlepic id=117 w=320 h=240 float=] was removed and replaced with a diesel and the wooden structure [singlepic id=119 w=320 h=240 float=] replaced with steel. Between 1948 and 2011, the tug went through many changes. Shark and Awe in the U.S. Senate

By Edward Dorson The U.S. Shark Conservation Act of 2009, a bill that offered a critical lifeline for sharks, has recently been blocked by a dysfunctional U.S. Senate. Sharks are being decimated primarily to supply shark fin soup as an expensive status symbol delicacy to the burgeoning middle class of Asia, mainly in China. If not rapidly passed, the Act will have no purpose once sharks hit their impending point of no return. Resurrecting this legislation is urgently needed for both the preservation of sharks and our nation’s fading conservation ethos. The threat to sharks from finning and to a planet that requires their continued existence isn’t half-baked ideology — it’s empirical fact.
