Fishing for a cure

While I was participating a highway cleanup Saturday morning with the Jacksonville Reef Research Team, TISIRI’s Joe Kistel was present at the Fishing For A Cure with The David Garrard Foundation. The event is intended to show support for our foster kids and their parents. It was a great weekend of activities and the weather cooperated all weekend long. Saturdays fishing event had everyone who caught something being a winner. Pictures from Saturday fishing tournament may be found at tisiri.com. Sundays event had us beginning with breakfast, then a boat ride off shore St. Augustine. The kids were great and I believe all of the kids caught something. We did have a couple that caught Cobia (two) and a couple that caught Atlantic Spade (two – but one fell off the hook … Read entire article »

The making and placement of the Kyle Conrad Memorial Reef

The preparations of the 19th century tug boat TUFF-E-NUFF began back sometime around October, 2010. TISIRI had caught wind of a vessel in the St. Mary’s river, Georgia. A 19th century tug boat TUFF-E-NUFF. Originally named Thomas Cunningham Sr, she was built in 1895 by Neafie & Levy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1948 the Thomas Cunningham Sr was rebuilt. The steam engine [singlepic id=117 w=320 h=240 float=] was removed and replaced with a diesel and the wooden structure  [singlepic id=119 w=320 h=240 float=] replaced with steel. Between 1948 and 2011, the tug went through many changes. In the 1970’s the name changed to TUFF-E-NUFF and on January 17, 2011 the name changed for the last time to KYLE CONRAD, to honor the memory of this young … Read entire article »

Divers want marine sanctuary in waters around Blue Heron Boulevard bridge

RIVIERA BEACH — Scuba divers are asking Palm Beach County to begin the process of designating the waters around the Blue Heron Boulevard bridge and Phil Foster Park as a marine sanctuary. The move is intended to stop the collection of tropical fish for aquariums. County Commissioner Karen Marcus said divers approached her to request the sanctuary designation, which the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission would have to approve. She was surprised to learn that the waters around the park and the bridge have become an internationally recognized hot spot for divers and underwater photographers. “This is a beautiful place, and I think biologically it’s very important,” said George Burgess, a zoologist who studies fish and the director of the Florida Program for Shark Research … Read entire article »

TUFF-E-NUFF no longer in the St. Marys River, GA.

Today Saturday January 8, 2011, I, Larry Davis, Joe Kistel, and Ed Kalakauskis boarded TUFF-E-NUFF at 08:12 EST. While Joe and Ed prepared the pumps to remove any residual water, I took picutres and video. At 09:20 we are informed by David with the Marinia that he see’s Dawn Star, the Tug coming to tow TUFF-E-NUFF towards St. Lucie, FL.  and Dawn Star ia about 20 minutes away. Well guess what, Ed and Joe jump on our boat and hustle to shore to get the something like 300lb anchor and bring it back before the tug arrives. Guess what? I pop out of the galley on the starboard side and look forward to see this red and white tug staring at me. WOW! kewl!!. I move aft where my camera is … Read entire article »

Jacksonville plans new reef off Ponte Vedra at Floyd’s Folly

Ponte Vedra will be site for what is hoped to boost marine business. Posted: December 20, 2010 – 12:00am By Steve Patterson A patch of ocean floor where Jacksonville built a concrete reef last year could have another one by next summer. See the article posted on Divetalking.com about 2009 placement.  Here is another link from TISIRI on FLoyds Folly. At least 700 tons of scrap concrete – old beams, junctions boxes, whatever castoffs the city can find – could be barged to a spot called Floyd’s Folly and deposited into the water off Ponte Vedra Beach. Man-made reefs become fish magnets – and destinations for fishermen – because they’re full of gaps and hiding places where smaller fish try to hide from bigger predators. Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has offered … Read entire article »
