Volga disaster: 110 bodies trapped in sunken boat
I thought this needed to be posted. As fellow divers, family members and citizens of the world, our empathy and sympathies go out to all involved, to the families we share our blessing and prayers. This is especially heart felt when children are involved. Here is a post from the MSNBC News just 45 minutes ago: Video KAZAN, Russia — Divers searching the wreck of a Russian Volga river boat reportedly saw more than one hundred corpses trapped inside the pleasure craft when they recovered dozens of bodies Monday. A few dozen divers working with underwater lights searched the Bulgaria, a double-decked boat built in 1955 that survivors said listed to its side and sank in minutes Sunday during stormy weather with more than 200 people on … Read entire article »
Shark Fishing Banned in the Bahamas
Many beach visitors cannot get past the image of the shark as a ravenous man-eater, but not scuba divers. For divers, sharks are graceful, powerful creatures and more often viewed with a sense of awe rather than fear. Shark diving has become a major attraction for scuba divers around the world, and the shark diving capital is probably the Bahamas. In a move to secure a tourism gold mine that earns the Atlantic island chain about $80 million a year, the Bahamas have banned all shark fishing from their national waters. Shark diving is a major fixture of scuba diving in the Bahamas. Most of these shark dives are centered on attracting large numbers of relatively harmless black tip and Caribbean reef … Read entire article »

Atlantis II in X-Men First Class
The Atlantis II was used in the filming of X-Men II First Class. You can see her about 15 minutes into the movie as the U.S. COAST GUARD Vessel. I just returned from the movie and it was pretty cool to see the deck where the cast was standing and knowing they were just above the bridge, which is where I was standing just a few weeks ago. Sweet. … Read entire article »

ATLANTIS II
The Atlantis II is the vessel used by Dr. Robert Ballard when the Titanic was discovered back in 1985. Atlantis II sits in Mayport Florida (Jacksonville), near the mouth of the St. Johns River. This famous vessel went off shore June 8, 2011 and I was invited to join her in her journey. The day started at 08:00 with me jumping in my vehicle to meet up at the pier for the 9am departure. With all my photography gear, I hussled onboard to meet the crew and owners of the vessel to immediately begin documenting the day, on film. I was introduced and took a tour of the vessel. We of course performed our US Coast Guard drills before hitting the ocean. What an impressive ship. She is beautiful and quite a … Read entire article »

Beechcraft Hawker plunges into Athens Scuba Park
The Athens Scuba park was one of my old stomping grounds when I lived in Dallas, Texas. Athens is about an hour SE from Dallas. I first learned of Athen Scuba Park in 1995 while visiting Athens, Texas. Since then until my departure from Texas in 2004, I visited the park extensively to perform training. Here is an article on a new plane just placed in the park made by scuba divers for scuba divers. Athens — It was a new experience in most localities for Memorial Day. Athens Scuba Park plummeted a 14-passenger jet into its crystal clear lake, Saturday, May 28 at noon. Calvin Wilcher, who owns the park with his wife, Shannon, said the plane was transported to the lake from an airplane salvage yard in … Read entire article »
