Hong Kong Taking Steps to protect Sharks and Blue Fin Tuna

The Govt has taken steps to reduce consumption of shark fin soup  and other goods which promote the harvesting of species such as Shark and Tuna.

Through the sustainability-conscious food consumption guidelines, “commitment to the promotion of green living and sustainability, the Government pledges to adopt sustainability-conscious food consumption during official entertainment functions, which includes no consumption of shark fins.”

Also stated “The Government is determined to take the lead and set a good example on this front that goes beyond the minimum expectation as laid down in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),” a Government spokesman, (September 13) Noting that no shark fin, bluefin tuna and black moss would be included in the conservation-conscious menus of official entertainment functions.

Statistics show that approximate 100 million sharks are removed from our oceans, YEARLY. An unsustainable amount, which eventually will lead to their extinction if the pattern is allowed to continue.

What this author is afraid of is the value of such commodities of shark and tuna has just gone up. With fewer visible need for the commodity going down, the grey and black market for such items will go up. We know we can not police the whole world, but with your help, the momentum to protect the species is going up.
