Canon 5D Mark III “Light Leak” Resolved: Will Start Shipping Again

Canon has responded to the “light leak” issues affecting the EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera. Products whose sixth digit in the serial number is 1 or 2 are affected. (e.g. “xxxxx1xxxxxx” or “xxxxx2xxxxxx” ([x] represents any optional number). Canon claims that the “light leak” problem will not affect your captured images. However, they are offering to inspect cameras free of charge starting mid-May. Residents of the United States and Puerto Rico should register their EOS 5D Mark III and sign up for the email notification. Canon will then notify you when service updates are available.

“In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change. However, based on the results of extensive testing this change in exposure value will not noticeably affect the captured image. If you would like Canon to inspect your camera, we will provide this service free of charge upon request beginning in mid-May. Please contact Canon using the information below to request service.”

According to CanonRumors.com, Canon should start shipping stock of the 5D Mark III since the problem has been resolved. Amazon, B&H Photo, and Adorama are offering the DSLR body for $3,499. The Canon 5D Mark III can also be ordered with a 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens for $4,299 from Amazon, B&H Photo, and Adorama. Please check the table below for availability.
