{"id":4931,"date":"2011-12-15T13:16:21","date_gmt":"2011-12-15T18:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/?p=4931"},"modified":"2011-12-15T13:19:44","modified_gmt":"2011-12-15T18:19:44","slug":"greenland-shark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/?p=4931","title":{"rendered":"Greenland Shark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a id=\"itxthook0\" href=\"http:\/\/updatednews.ca\/2011\/12\/15\/greenland-shark-creature-that-eats-polar-bears-and-can-live-until-200-video-footage\/#\" rel=\"nofollow\">daredevil<\/a>\u00a0photographer went to extraordinary lengths to photograph these rarely seen sharks, which look like they have been etched from stone.<\/p>\n<p>These incredible Greenland sharks can survive for more than 200 years at depths of up to 600 metres under Arctic ice. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/?attachment_id=4933\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4933\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-4933\" title=\"The-Greenland-shark\" src=\"https:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/The-Greenland-shark-250x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/The-Greenland-shark-250x163.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/The-Greenland-shark-200x130.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.divetalking.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/The-Greenland-shark.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bigger than the notorious great white, they grow to 23-feet long and are so fearsome they have even been known to eat polar bears.<\/p>\n<p>They live further north than any other shark species and can swim in waters where temperatures plummet to just one degree celsius.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Perrine had a close encounter with the elusive creatures when they ventured into the warmer waters of the St Lawrence River in North America, hunting for food.<\/p>\n<p>The sharks usually eat large seals but have even been known to polish off polar bears and <a id=\"itxthook1\" href=\"http:\/\/updatednews.ca\/2011\/12\/15\/greenland-shark-creature-that-eats-polar-bears-and-can-live-until-200-video-footage\/#\" rel=\"nofollow\">reindeer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But 59-year-old Mr Perrine, from Kailua Kona, Hawaii, was <a id=\"itxthook2\" href=\"http:\/\/updatednews.ca\/2011\/12\/15\/greenland-shark-creature-that-eats-polar-bears-and-can-live-until-200-video-footage\/#\" rel=\"nofollow\">brave<\/a> enough to swim to just a metre away from the giants to get his shots.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018These sharks were very placid and curious. They are much calmer than other sharks \u2013 they have an almost goofy, comical appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was amazed because most sharks are very shy of divers and tend to avoid the sound of scuba bubbles, but these these were attracted to the sound. They even swam closer to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When I moved in closer to get a better shot, they did not flee but continued on their way at a steady pace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe added: \u2018The sharks were able to satisfy their curiosity about me by approaching to the limit of visibility at about six metres distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Although they were <a id=\"itxthook3\" href=\"http:\/\/updatednews.ca\/2011\/12\/15\/greenland-shark-creature-that-eats-polar-bears-and-can-live-until-200-video-footage\/#\" rel=\"nofollow\">swimming<\/a> in quite a lazy fashion, they are much more streamlined than me.
