She was operated by the Harbour Board of the <a title=\"Port of Richmond\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_of_Richmond\">Port of Richmond<\/a>, <a title=\"Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\">Virginia<\/a> for more than eighty years.<\/p>\n<p>After 45 years of service, <em>Thomas Cunningham Sr.<\/em> was sent to <a title=\"Newport News\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newport_News\">Newport News<\/a> for the annual inspection where she was placed into &#8220;durance vile&#8221;\u2014meaning the vessel was considered unsafe to operate. <sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-3\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>Her papers where seized and she was suspended from duty until repairs where made. The main complaint was deck issues. <sup id=\"cite_ref-4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-4\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> The Richmond City Council quickly approved the budget extension for $8,000 to get the repairs completed <sup id=\"cite_ref-5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-5\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> and get their tug back.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in late 1948, <em>Thomas Cunningham Sr.<\/em> finally got a much needed major refit. The wooden pilot house and deck were replaced with steel versions, and a 500 <a title=\"Horsepower\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horsepower\">horsepower<\/a> (370\u00a0<a title=\"Kilowatt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilowatt\">kW<\/a>) Cleveland 8-268A <a title=\"Diesel engine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diesel_engine\">diesel<\/a> engine was installed to replace the original <a title=\"Steam engine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steam_engine\">steam engine<\/a>. The entire cost of the project, including sending two maintenance people to the Cleveland factory for training, was $65,927.02. <sup id=\"cite_ref-6\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-6\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> Out of the 9 bidders for the work, Dunn&#8217;s Marine Railway, Inc. of West Norfolk won the bid and completed the work approximately $11,000 under budget. <sup id=\"cite_ref-7\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-7\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 1977 the vessel was sold into private hands,<sup id=\"cite_ref-model_8-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-model-8\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> and reportedly became a <a title=\"Salvage tug\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salvage_tug\">salvage tug<\/a> in <a title=\"Florida\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida\">Florida<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-yahoo_2-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-yahoo-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> In May 2007, the tug was placed on the market by her owners, a salvage company, who were hoping to sell her to restorers. As of 2008, she was registered as a recreational vessel according to the <a title=\"U.S. Coast Guard\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Coast_Guard\">U.S. Coast Guard<\/a>&#8216;s Port State Information eXchange. <sup id=\"cite_ref-9\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-9\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>As of November 2010, Tuff-E-Nuff is on a sandbar in Georgia and an organization is working to sink the tug as an artificial reef. <sup id=\"cite_ref-10\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-10\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Mariners Museum collection<\/h3>\n<p>In 1951, the ship&#8217;s original engine was acquired by the <a title=\"Mariners' Museum\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mariners%27_Museum\">Mariners&#8217; Museum<\/a> at <a title=\"Newport News, Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newport_News,_Virginia\">Newport News, Virginia<\/a>. The engine has since been restored to working order\u2014albeit powered by electricity rather than steam\u2014and is on display at the Museum.<sup id=\"cite_ref-engine_11-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuff-E-Nuff_%28tugboat%29#cite_note-engine-11\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The engine is a two-<a title=\"Cylinder (engine)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cylinder_%28engine%29\">cylinder<\/a> <a title=\"Compound engine\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compound_engine\">compound<\/a> type with an 18-inch (46 cm) <a title=\"Stroke (engine)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stroke_%28engine%29\">stroke<\/a>, and 206 <a title=\"Horsepower\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horsepower#Indicated_horsepower\">indicated horsepower<\/a> (154\u00a0<a title=\"Kilowatt\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilowatt\">kW<\/a>). The high-pressure cylinder is 12\u00bd inches (32 cm) in diameter and the low-pressure cylinder is 24\u00a0inches (61 cm).
