Lionfish are categorized as one of the most invasive species to hit the eastern shores of the United States, Bahamas, Caribbean, Central and South America. Their native habitat is the Indo-West Pacific region, but there are now known to be established populations off the coast of Florida, and in the Indian River Lagoon. Because they consume so much prey in their native habitats, lionfish aren’t considered a threat to native fish populations. However, since their introduction here in the U.S., they have been eating their way through native fish populations at an alarming rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sightings of lionfish sightings have increased exponentially since 2010, and it is predicted that if steps aren’t taken soon to control the population, it will result in a significant decline in commercially harvested fish populations within a few years. Lionfish are also difficult for divers to catch because of their poisonous spines. Most professionals who dive for lionfish use a spear or a special tool called a “bump-stick.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
