The making and placement of the Kyle Conrad Memorial Reef

The preparations of the 19th century tug boat TUFF-E-NUFF began back sometime around October, 2010. TISIRI had caught wind of a vessel in the St. Mary’s river, Georgia. A 19th century tug boat TUFF-E-NUFF. Originally named Thomas Cunningham Sr, she was built in 1895 by Neafie & Levy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1948 the Thomas Cunningham Sr was rebuilt. The steam engine [singlepic id=117 w=320 h=240 float=] was removed and replaced with a diesel and the wooden structure  [singlepic id=119 w=320 h=240 float=] replaced with steel. Between 1948 and 2011, the tug went through many changes. In the 1970’s the name changed to TUFF-E-NUFF and on January 17, 2011 the name changed for the last time to KYLE CONRAD, to honor the memory of this young … Read entire article »

Manta Ray filmed off Jacksonville

This film clip of a manta ray was taken Friday October 22, 2010 off the coast of Jacksonville Florida. The divers reported the scale was at least a 20 foot wing span.  This is a first. I never knew they came this close to our coast line. October 22, 2010, a Friday to remember for these divers who not only saw the Manta Ray but filmed her. The TISIRI team was once again working on the environment. Out collecting trash as part of a grant by West Marine. The days events were being documented on film. Joe Kistel, as the last diver to enter the water explains the story to me like this: I was just about the enter the water when Ed pops up yelling “hey big bam rayjama smellow.” The captain … Read entire article »

Tuff-E-Nuff

It is Sunday September 5, 2010 and we’re off to St. Mary’s Georgia to a Marina that has a 19th century tug sitting on a sandbar at the edge of the river. It is around 11:30am when we arrive at St. Mary’s Boat Service where the tug is located. Today we took the opportunity to document the vessel and our ideas on getting her prepared for her new home, hopefully somewhere off the coast of Florida. Here is a small video of that day. Off to Film “The Spike”

It’ 6:30am on a Friday, August 20 and I am waiting for the rest of the gang to show up at Mayport Docks. The sun light is just starting to show itself. Two of the other divers show up around 7am. we setup our gear while we’re waiting for your boat and captain to arrive. At around 7:45am all four of us head out, three divers and the captain, who is also a diver towards Spike. Spike sits about 25 miles almost due east of the Mayport Jetties. It is a very nice day. Almost no clouds and the weather report calls for temps in the 90’s, sea condition show to be 2-3 feet (on the NOAA website) yet other boaters are reporting 2 feet or less with about an 11 … Read entire article »

June 18 – 21 2010 Grand Bahamas trip

The trip began at 6pm Thursday June 17th. Picking up Jason and Tara, owners of Scubaextreme dive shop in Middleburg, Florida, we start the trip down to Ft. Lauderdale. We stop about 30 miles North of Ft. Lauderdale to spend the night at a friends home. Up and out the door by 6am Friday morning to continue our route to Port Everglades to catch our boat to the Bahamas. Grand Bahamas is the destination this day. We hopped, skipped and jumped to our boat. OK, some walked. Discovery Cruise Lines was our carrier. A pretty cool boat. The passage ways wind and do not follow the same path on either side. You will have to walk outside and take ladders up as you find them. I lost more than 1/2 our guest the … Read entire article »

Diving Memorial Weekend, 2010

I will be heading to Ginnie Springs Memorial weekend, May 31, 2010. My plans are to just relax. Dive when I feel like diving. I plan on filming to get use to the new camera, housing and lights. I believe the place may be packed with tubers. It’s too early to tell what the weather will be like that three day weekend. We can only hope for SUNNY days. I also plan on camping one night, Saturday night. Arrive at 9AM Saturday, depart when ever Sunday. Who knows, maybe I’ll spend two nights. I sure hope it’s not too hot at night. I wonder if I should carry a fan. There is electricity and water at each camp site. I’ll let you know how it turns out after the memorial weekend is … Read entire article »

Paradise Springs, Ocala Florida

Today, Saturday May 8th, I and a friend drove to Paradise Springs in Ocala. We met up with Gerold (Jerry) from Divebuddy. There were a number others who announced they wanted to go, but didn’t make it. It was nice. I was the first at the site. We signed in and drove over to get our best spot and began unloading and preparing to be the first to enter the water while the visibility was good. Dave and I went in along with Michael, who drove out and surprised me being there. We scoured around the place finding a number of figurines tucked in glooves or placed on shelves. I notice on the ceiling what appeared to be ribbon from the formation above. I also noticed that it went around this one hugh piece … Read entire article »

Blue Grotto with Lisa Fantastic

Today I met up with Lisa at Blue Grotto for some diving. Lisa and I spoke Friday and since my plans this past weekend did not including diving due to schedule work, and that scheduled work was cancelled, I am free to do some diving. Perfect timing. We met soon after Blue Grotto Opened. We were the first two divers onsite. Lisa Texts me at 07:59 saying she beat me. I respond with OMG!, hoping she would think I forgot, when I was actually just 1 minute away. We spoke for awhile and after about an hour we hit the water. Ooops, gear failure. It appears a spring in the exhaust valve is missing and the BCD cannot hold air. One phone call and 10 minutes later, a … Read entire article »

Mona Passage, PR Dec. 26, 2009 – Jan 2, 2010

This trip was an interesting trip. It started on Saturday December 26, 2009. The flight into San Juan, Puerto Rico was uneventful and quite fast. The weather into PR that day was around 80 degrees and the sun was shining. I have about a 5 hour wait for the shuttle to Mayaguez, a three hour ride. One van, my van and the van carrying all the dive gear left the airport at around 6pm for our first stop, the grocery store. There I search for super glue. See, while waiting at the airport, I put my new video camera into the housing to find the housing doesn’t quite work with this new camera. I discover I am only able to turn the camera on/off. No zoom, no macro, no other controls may be reached using the housing mechanism to press the neccessary … Read entire article »
